Boot Hockey

I stopped in the office today to pick up my laptop. It’s been snowing all day so our roads are a mess – again – for like the 100th time this winter of non-stop snow here in Wisconsin.

But this morning also brought some boot hockey with the crew from my old job. Big T and I rolled out of bed this morning, bundled up and joined my old friends for some boot hockey at a local park frozen over with ice rinks.

Worth prefacing, I am not coordinated at all with a stick in my hands and on ice. I wiped out a lot. My elbow is still sore from one particular complete wipe out. But hey, I scored two goals!! And two assists. And my one stint at goalie rather sucked, because I let in three, but the other team had some kids with actual hockey experience. So I’m going with the positive – I had two goals!!

I think I also had about 30 shots, but let’s not think about how many times I wiffed it. 🙂

Tonight, I’m hanging out with my mom. If you haven’t hung out with your mom in a while, you should. Or you should call her. Mom’s are awesome.

On Success …

“Success is the sum of small efforts – repeated day in and day out.”
– Robert Collier

Been busy in the real world, putting my nose to the grind.

Between work, non-rugby life and rugby team life, there hasn’t been time to dwell on blogging. I’ll get back when I can, probably will need to schedule it in.

Hope you’re all well. And staying warm if you’re freezing like me in the Midwest. Brrrr.

Marion Jones

The unfolding story of Marion Jones’ downfall is truly sad.

And now she’s going to prison.

This guy thinks she deserves it

The most disappointing thing is Jones could have gone down in history as the greatest female athlete ever by doing it naturally. She was so good even before using steroids that she didn’t need them to win far more than her fair share of fortune and fame.

That wasn’t good enough. Jones got greedy.

She cheated, and she lied. She still might be lying about how much she knew and when she knew it.

It won’t be any fun watching her go to prison. But I’d be lying if I didn’t think she was getting what she deserves.

What do you think?

I would like to nominate the clementine for the “Coolest Citrus Fruit Ever” award.

Seriously, I love them. They are small, portable, juicy and easy to peel. And don’t have seeds!

And when you find them on sale, it’s even better.

Seriously, go find some and eat them. They are awesome. And good for you.

Happy New Year!

I’m pretty excited it’s 2008. I’m looking forward to all of this year’s possibilities.

Here’s a great quote I saw today …

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle

A good one for all of thinking of what resolutions or goals we might have for the new year.

Had a nice and long, but productive, four-day weekend. I’m completely moved in to Big T’s house and we painted both his living room and dining room too. My hand is still cramped up from nearly 20 hours of priming, taping and painting, then repainting. And then moving some more.

People will probably think we’re crazy, but we painted his living room “Fudge Truffle” (a deep chocolate brown) and his dining room “Granite Falls” which is a medium grayish blue. It’s somewhat intense, but we really like them.

And already less than a week until Monkey Bar Gym classes start …

Clarification and Apology

All –

I received a nice e-mail today from a longtime reader and fellow blogger. I’ll leave it quiet who it was, but she wrote to ask me what’s up related to this post among some other stuff that’s happened lately.

She also said “lately you really seem to be laying into other women’s rugby bloggers” and “I guess I’m just stating my opinion that copy-cat is a bit of a derogatory term especially if you’re trying to encourage more discussion and exposure of women’s rugby.”

So I would like to apologize to everyone for this. I won’t go back and delete the post or anything else I’ve written, but I will say I’m sorry if this was read as anti-women’s rugby bloggers. I never meant it that way.

It actually has nothing to do with any one blog specifically, and is definitely not just women’s rugby. But I get a lot of e-mails and sometimes even phone calls (one while I was at work!) from people out there who want to, for example, know how much money I make off of my ads (if I’m lucky, a nickel a day, which is nobody’s business but mine if we’re being polite). Or who wants links from here to get traffic for a blog they just started, haven’t really written anything of worth, and then a month later, they disappear again. Or I visit sites and they’re ripping some player or team (American or International) to shreds without any thought for how this affects that player, that team or the greater community.

A lot of this is due to the fact that I have been getting a lot more visitors and traffic, even the link from the BBC – which was awesome – but definitely ramped up a lot of the bullshit stuff too.

I meant “copycat” in regards to sites that are just out there instantaneously, regurgitating some of my posts (and some of yours), copying and pasting directly from news sites without proper sources (so it looks like they wrote it themselves), or even in one case, a site that copied my link lists directly in exactly the same order. With no regards for trying to do something on their own merits.

I hope this makes sense. I didn’t think I needed to explain this, but clearly some of you took it personally, which was not my intention. So I’m sorry.

For all of you out there, who are writing and sharing your views of the rugby world, whether it’s from Wisconsin, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, England, Japan, Germany or anywhere else … please keep doing what you’re doing. It’s awesome.
