Do you need to be a "elite" athlete to be an "elite" coach?

Great discussion over at Put Me In Coach.

A new coach asks if it is necessary for a coach to have “high level athlete experience” in order to coach “high level rugby”?

In turn, are the women of rugby holding themselves to higher standards than our male counterparts?

My experience playing in the Super League with the Dallas Harlequins definitely prepared me for coaching the Lady Fog. Even as a sub, seeing the game at a higher level changed my thinking, and helped me coach players up.
