USWRF’s New Orleans Rugby Recovery Effort

My teammate Maggie sent me an e-mail about this and I’m going to offer it up to my teammates as a possible spring trip …

The New Orleans Rugby Recovery Effort

Although it has been over a year since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and the surrounding area are still in great need of assistance in the clean up effort and rebuilding of homes. The United States Women’s Rugby Foundation is coordinating a volunteer effort to lend a helping hand with this important endeavor.

The New Orleans Rugby Recovery Effort is a volunteer opportunity to spend two days working side by side with other volunteers to help clean up and rebuild homes in the New Orleans area. We will be organizing volunteers for the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity and will assist on one or more of their ongoing projects. Projects will include both the construction of new homes and repair of surviving homes. We have selected the dates of this volunteer effort to coincide with the renewal of the Mardi Gras Women’s Rugby Tournament.

Mardi Gras Women’s Rugby Tournament

DATES: February 17th and 18th, 2007

The New Orleans Women’s Rugby Club is working to revive the Mardi Gras Women’s Rugby Tournament, which was cancelled last year in the aftermath of Katrina. While the tournament’s revival is not 100% confirmed, they are working with USRFU to obtain all necessary requirements to host this event. Volunteers in the New Orleans Rugby Recovery Effort are encouraged to stay the weekend and help the New Orleans Women’s Rugby Club host a successful event. Getting rugby back on track in this area is an important goal to achieve. Any assistance would be extremely appreciated to keep awareness focused on New Orleans. Please join the USWRF in assisting the New Orleans Half Moons to revive one of our oldest Women’s Rugby events.
