Open Tryout for National 7s Team

I saw this on the USA Rugby site this morning …

5-4-2006 – WNT Sevens Scouting Camp
USA Rugby Women’s Natoinal Sevens Scouting Camp
June 23-25 | Lemont, Ill.

There will be an open tryout for the USA Rugby Women’s National Sevens Team pool from June 23-25. All interested players are invited to attend. (**Please note camp requirements.)

The purposes of this camp is to identify new players to enter the national pool. Selected participants will be invited to the USA Rugby Women’s Sevens Footwork Camps.

Coaches Jules McCoy, Mark Santiago, Emil Signes, and Chris Ryan will introduce a new playing style to the camp attendees, bringing participants skills and knowledge of the game to the level required by the USA Rugby Women’s National Sevens Team.

The camp will begin Friday, June 23 with a mandatory gym session. Saturday and Sunday will be spent on the pitch. The camp will conclude Sunday afternoon at approximately 2p.m.

Players will be responsible for all travel expenses including: airfare; ground transportation to and from pitch, airport and hotels; hotel; and food. A block of rooms will be reserved near the venue in the name of the USA Rugby Women’s National Team. Players will be responsible for contacting the hotel by June 12 in order to obtain the team room rate.

Registration for the camp is required. (There is no camp fee.) Please contact Mary Swanstrom (meswanstrom@yahoo.com, 619/733-3647) by June 9 to register. Hotel information, directions, maps, and schedules will be sent to all registered participants.

It is cool that they are holding an open tryout and it’s so close to Wisconsin, only a bit over two hours down in Lemont, Ill. Here’s my quandry though … what if you’re interested in attending to learn and be part of that competitive environment, but you’re fairly sure you don’t have a shot in hell of making the 7s team? Hmmm … something to think about.

And three days, huh?

Q: “… what if you’re interested in attending to learn and be part of that competitive environment, but you’re fairly sure you don’t have a shot in hell of making the 7s team?”

A: Go anyway! At the least, it benefits your personal game. Even better, it also benefits your club teammates when you take the stuff you learn at camp back to them. And if enough people do that, the quality of women’s rugby as a whole improves (thus producing better candidates to try out for the national team). What a lovely cycle.

Good point. We’ll just have to see how scheduling goes and if I have some interested teammates as well. It’s a possibility though. Plus, I could blog about it. 😉
