Online Petition to Ask ESPN to Broadcast Rugby

Thanks to Chris in Milwaukee and Jenna in New York for sending this to me. I already signed it and forwarded it on to my teams. Pass it on …

A petition was created that will be sent to both the ESPN and Fox Sports Programming Department to lobby for rugby coverage on ESPN’s basic cable ESPN/ESPN2 channels and Fox Sports. I find it inconceivable that a sport with as much tradition and excitement as rugby is not made available to the general public on basic cable. Many of us cannot afford the expensive premium channels that now broadcast rugby, so we’re hoping that the basic cable sports networks will give rugby the coverage it deserves to appease its hungry fan base. It’ll sure beat poker, paintball, and dog shows, which ESPN broadcasts regularly. Here is the link to the petition:

The full text of the petition can be read at the above link. It takes only twenty seconds to fill the petition out. I’m asking that this email and petition link be forwarded to as many people as possible to further this cause. My goal is to gather 100,000+ signatures. Thanks.

"I’m not ready to make nice, I’m not ready to back down, I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round …"

I’m listening to the new Dixie Chicks song, “Not Ready to Make Nice“, and I really like it.

I’m not a super political person, I have my own politics and I keep them separate from everyone else’s. And I encourage others to treat me in the same manner. Nothing up in your face.

But I thought all the hullabaloo over the Chicks was misplaced, so I’m enjoying that the first single off the new CD is basically saying that they are standing up for themselves and living without regret.

I don’t know, the lyrics are just applicable to other life experiences in a way. It’s probably my stubborn streak identifying so solidly with this situation.

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

For any of you that have never listened to the Chicks because they are “country”, you’re really missing out. I have loved each and every one of their CDs and I’m not really a big country fan.

Now I just have to figure out how to steal the album download from my sister’s iTunes. 😉

Slow rugby news day …

Not much happenin’ out there …

• There was speculation of Eagle mens’ players striking, but nope. Oeler’s blogging about it here.

• And Rachel in NYC changed her blog name to Brooklyn Bubble. Update your links!

• Interesting update on the West Women’s All-Star team. Turns out (and sorry I didn’t notice …) that the Austin Valkyries are lacking any representation. An anonymous commenter wanted to pass this on …

The Austin Valkyries just wanted to give you the skinny on why none of us are on the West squad…

Basically, we had a pre-arranged a match against New York and Boston in NYC, the same weekend as the West Select vs. Eagles match in Minnesota. So we didn’t all want to change our tickets and were then deemed ineligible for any West events for this entire year.

We had a great time in New York, but we would also have loved the opportunity to play for the West.

Yes, that’s too bad how it turned out.

• This weekend are the men’s club championships, FYI. And next weekend, NASCs and the Eagles vs. Canada matches out in Boulder.

• And finally, in a quasi-trip down Blondie’s memory lane, the national spelling bee finals will be aired on ABC. I love these kids! Sometimes they are just crazy. 🙂 And it takes me back to when a little Blondie won the 8th grade Knights of Columbus spelling bee. Yup! That’s right. I qualified up to the regional spelling bee. For the record, 8th grade was also the year I won the dance contest and won a box of Charlie perfume. I believe I danced to an MC Hammer song. Oh yeah!

(by the way, I kept spelling “bee” as “beer”. Damn welsh!)

Ahhh … Wednesday!

I’m going back to work today. Yesterday’s day of rest was very good for me, but my decision to check out the social last night with our men’s team and the visiting Welsh men’s team was probably a poor choice. A fun and adventurous choice, but poor nonetheless. 😉

At one point, I had 60 Welsh rugby men following me down State Street here in downtown Madison. Always good. Hard to understand sometimes. But always good.

By the way, we have introduced the Welsh to the dangers of Jagerbombs. Europe may never be the same.

Tonight, the teams will play a few games and I believe all players will be suffering a bit from last night’s excursion. Thankfully, I do not have to play. Not that I had more than a beer or two anyway.

And my little cartoon Blondie finally has a rugby-like outfit. They added soccer outfit options for the World Cup. I finally have cleats! I hope they keep them.

Rugby Bits & Bites …

– USA Rugby’s newest headline on happenings in Boulder in June with NASCs, Eagle matches with Canada, etc.

– Also, the North American 4 results. Our boys lost.

– WomenEagles has updated its site with some notes on the World Cup team (also featured on last week’s World Cup announcement on USA Rugby’s site) but also some travel info to the World Cup.

– A brief recap on the European 7s and how the Irish, English and Welsh women’s teams performed. Wales beat England to win the title.

– Two All-Blacks players get in a fight at a bar, one strikes the other with a purse and makes him cry. And people don’t think rugby players are sensitive! 🙂 By the way, do you think the PR folks are trying to spin the fighting story or the part about the tough rugby guy crying. I don’t think that goes over so well in New Zealand man circles.

So, I’m still sick and battling this cold that causes me to cough and wears me out. I fought it all weekend to enjoy the sun and heat and spending time with friends and family.

But I woke up this morning and am still sick, so I’m staying home from work and just blogging a few things in the next post. Today will be a day of rest, catching up and trying to build back up speed to jump in at pace with the rest of the world.

Good comments in the open thread post though. We’ll revisit that again later.

Drink some OJ and eat your fruits and veggies, so you don’t get sick like me kids.

By the way, there is a Welsh touring rugby team here in Madison this week to play our men’s team. Three days of rugby socials, games and festivities. Another reason to chug some OJ.

Friday Morning … And An Open Thread

More sick today and lacking sleep from a restless night. Am taking care of some necessary projects this morning, then going home to rest and hopefully regroup. Will blog later.

Because of this, I’d like to use this post as an open thread in the comments today and for the weekend. What do all of you feel like talking about? Any ideas, issues, challenges?

Inevitably, I post something and people tell me that it’s something they have thought about too, so this is your chance to be the blogger today.
