UVa Women Win VWIT Tourney
March 5, 2006 – The University of Virginia women’s rugby team solidified their #3 national ranking by winning the Virginia Women’s Invitational Tournament.

In a highly competitive tourney featuring several ranked sides, UVa and Navy made it to the final match.

In the opening matches on Saturday, the big upset may well have been Cornell (unranked) over #9 Princeton 27-10. UVa. defeated Temple 51-0, Navy shut out Florida by a large margin, and Army rolled over JMU 30-0.

In the second round, Navy defeated Cornell 30-0 in an impressive display, while UVa. really had to work at it to defeat a shifty and physical Army side.

Princeton defeated Florida and JMU beat Temple.

In the semis on Sunday, Navy beat Army 18-12 and Virginia beat Cornell 22-0.

That led to the final, where Virginia led 10-0 at the half and the two sides traded tries in the second half for a 17-7 final score.

JMU beat Princeton 22-5 for 5th place.

The Munster U21 and Senior teams will play two games against a top American touring side this week in Cork.

On Tuesday, the Munster U21 side will face the Penn State University Women’s team at Woodleigh Park, the grounds of Highfield RFC. It will be the first outing this season for the U21 side, who are led by Ballincollig scrum half Claire Rigney. That game kicks off at 4.30pm.

On Thursday night, the Munster senior side will face the same opposition at Cork Con’s grounds at 7.30pm. The seniors will be led for the first time by Highfield centre Deirdre Lynch.

Penn State are one of the strongest Varsity teams in the US, and top players include Kirsten Aerts and Claudia Braymer who were involved in the national team’s recent tour of Ireland, and last year two players were named in the Women’s collegiate All-Americans first team, chosen from a pick of 10,000 players.
